Certificate in Basic English
Summer 2010
This intensive English literacy program of up to 24-30 units, provided by Pacific Islands University (PIU), is designed to assist two distinct groups of potential students:
- Students who would like to enter a regular certificate or degree program at PIU but do not meet the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score requirement of 450 AND/OR
- Residents of the island of Guam whose limited English language skills hinder them from being employed locally.

TOEFL Test Required:
A recent (within the last 6 months) TOEFL score is required before you can complete the registration process.
PIU will offer the TOEFL on Monday, April 26th at its main campus in Mangilao from
1:00-4:00PM. The cost for the TOEFL is $15.00.
(Note: This is an institutional TOEFL and is only useful for applying to PIU courses and programs).

The CBE program is offered in two separate semesters:
Semester One:
ENGL 81R – English Reading 1: This class focuses on developing the vocabulary and skills necessary to read newspapers, menus, labels, written
directions in simple technical manuals and/or employee manuals, and (eventually) college textbooks.
ENGL 82R – English Writing 1: This class focuses on sentence and short paragraph writing with remedial grammar instruction, as well as learning to take telephone messages, write brief memos, and short professional emails.
ENGL83R – Basic Bible Knowledge and the Christian/Western Culture: This class uses the Bible and simple classic literature as the basis for developing English skills, conversational fluency, and a basic understanding of the works being studied. Further, the course discusses how these works have shaped and influenced
ENGL 84R – Academic and Workplace Expectations: This English class focuses on developing college-level study and work skills to prepare immigrants for further education and/or prepare them for the working world. Special focus in this class is on computer usage skills.
Semester Two:
Provides 12 units of the above classes at an appropriately higher level.
The 2010 Summer CBE Program:
Being planned as a “one semester” equivalent program, will incorporate a “forays into the community” element where the skills being taught in class will be exercised in the community at large. Students will spend eight weeks in the above classes. In addition, they will travel to local historical and notable sites on
The instructors for this summer intensive are native speakers of English who have all had experience in teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) at a wide variety of levels. All possess either bachelor's or master's degrees in English or TESL and have taught in the United States and abroad.
Classes may be repeated as necessary until the skills are attained. Public/PELL grant funding will provide for up to 30 units of remediation.
